Airlines always want to do what they can to reduce costs, training is always expensive, so if candidates are willing to stump up the money, then they will always take it. There is NO risk to the company at all. This will always be a win win situation for the employer, or is that accountant ?
It does seem to be a sad situation that so many candidates are so desperate to self type rate. As if this is the only way to go. I know and am aware that instructors arent paid well, but this is a good way to build up flight time, and then move across to single crew IFR companies. Granted this is hard work and doesnt pay well, but better to have this, than the expense of type ratings and Zero Hours.
In fact a good friend of mine working in operations department of a good ppl school is on average receiving 4 cv's per week from low houred pilots (under 800 hours) with type ratings a320 or b737 looking for employment doing anything.
How pilots manage to fund these expensive ratings? I cannot imagine, and how they are able to make the repayments must be tough going and perhaps in some cases they don't.
I do find it very worrying that there is also a growing trend of pilots willing to go ahead and also pay up to 50,000 Euros on top of the type rating to do line training. Yes, if so many candidates are willing to do this, then there will always be an employer gladly to take them on board, just bring your wallet.
The airlines need to hire crews, a training bond reducing per month over a fixed period is, I think a more fair way of doing things. It also encourages a degree of respect from employees too.There cannot be that many pilots out there with such deep pockets to continue paying and I think things are slowly turning in favour of those with shallow pockets.
I hope that this trend will stop but sadly I am not so sure. But whatever route you choose, think carefully and Best of luck to you .
