A windows-using friend of mine had similar problems, with WMP becoming buggy after installing iTunes 5. Using a little trial and error, this is what we eventually came up with, which worked for her:
Do a system restore to before the iTunes install (uninstallers or the win software uninstall are not to be trusted IMHO)
Download the latest version of iTunes
here (it was updated to version 5.01 last week)
Install as normal... but ensure you leave
unchecked any boxes which ask you to make iTunes or Quicktime your default media player
