‘ Sir, We live in a world that has aircraft, and those aircraft have to be maintained, Who’s gonna do it? You? We have greater responsibility than you can fathom. You weep for a lost task and curse the engineers. You have the luxury of not knowing what we know. A lost task due to an unsafe, unserviceable aircraft – while tragic – probably saves lives, and our existence – while grotesque and incomprehensible to you – saves lives! You don’t want the truth because deep down, in places you don’t talk about at parties, you want us maintaining that aircraft, you need us maintaining that aircraft. We use words like quality, professionalism and safety as the backbone of a life spent maintaining aircraft, you use them as a punchline! We have neither the time nor inclination to explain yourselves to a man who rises and sleeps under the very blanket of aircraft serviceability we provide and the questions the manner in which we provided it. We would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way. Otherwise we suggest you pick up a spanner and work a shift. Either way we don’t give a damn what you think you’re entitled to.
