In my experience no company has ever offered a guaranteed amount of overtime. So if people need overtime to pay the bills then they want to sort themselves out financially rather than relying on what is not necessarily a guaranteed income. It was only a couple of years ago that there was no overtime on the North Sea because of the downturn in the oil price. What did these people do then – rob banks, prostitution?

Then of course if people do need overtime to get by perhaps they should do more to secure better pay and conditions rather than accept ‘rice bowl’ wages.

The problem is, especially on the North Sea, that there are too many of the ex military pilots who are still saluting and marching up and down the square to the management drumbeat. They need to remember that on civvy street you actually have rights and are entitled to decent pay and conditions. If the management ask you to do something you’re not happy about you can actually say no. Honestly guys it’s true, forget the salutes and think for yourselves.
