I DO ask. But not if the Queue has already built up and we're at the back of it.
My point is, although apparantly it's not easy to grasp
, that if YOU took the initiative (as they do in GLA), and gently prompted the number 1 "to advise if at any time you'd like to continue visually" you'd not get the queue building up in the first place!
