I would imagine their perspective will vary, depending on where you have been flying, to some extent, and also who happens to be on the desk at the time!
I can only quote what the regs say, what I was told by PLD, and what I have just witnessed happen this week to someone who didn't have a formal 'type rating' on a licence.
