I am not an engineer, but common sense dictates that if the contamination is from the bleed air which is what air con is running on, making a higher flow is giving more fumes into the cabin.
The very point is that it is not fresh air you are putting into the cabin. By switching the recirc fans off, all you are doing is eliminating a possible source of smoke fumes and making a/c units go to high flow.
It is this air that is contaminated. If you are trying to remove the smoke/ fumes you increase the ventilation rate by the outflow valve posistion.
Effectivelly depresurising the aircraft. A bit extreme. That was my point.
