On the DC-9, one of the control checks done by the FO is to push the yoke all the way forward and look for a blue "Elev. Power" light. This indicates that the left hydraulic system (has accum back-up) is actuating both control tabs upward, which would help the elevators to go downward during a deep stall, lowering the nose .

And the DC-9 uses "no stinkin" computers to fly-one needs to know how to be a pilot . "Mode managers" not wanted there, nor needed. And with no FE!
