Try this- climb to 1500'. At 1000' turn (left for Captain, right for copilot handling) to fly downwind. After take-off check followed by Approach check. When abeam downwind end of runway (either use side visual display or map display position), start stopwatch.
At 30 seconds (less 1second per kt tailwind), gear down, flap to intermediate position, Landing Checklist, start turn towards runway (all at the same time!), small movements only of thrust lever, gentle descent 500 feet/minute. Should be a slow relaxed turn as your airspeed is lower than when you turned downwind).
On Base leg, look for runway coming into forward visual display, assess high or low. Take full flap by 1000' or earlier if high.
It seemed to work on the 737 and the 747.
