In a highly publicised £44m campaign, it reconfigured its entire fleet by taking out several rows of seats from each aircraft, thus increasing seat pitch in economy to 34in-36in. It did this without increasing fares, gambling on the fact that travellers would choose to fly on American because it treated them with more respect. The gamble paid off..."
