IIRC a couple of the new rotations into both GLA + EDI are subsidised by the Scottish development somehting or other? There was a big announcement in (I think) 2003 when they provided help to enable more direct flights?
They might be able to do that to an American but not to an EU airline, I suspect. I sit to be corrected.
