Liam, I followed your instructions but still things weren't quite right. On HJT, there was no O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DeskAd Service] C:\Program Files\DeskAd Service\DeskAdServ.exe to fix.
Then after deleting the contents of the Windows\temp folder, I was unable to locate C:\windows\system32\comkd.dll in order to delete it!
I ran shredder, but it would not continue in safe mode past CWS.MSconfig, but in normal mode it ran fine and reported that there were no infections found, it restored 3 internet explorer pages, and there was no sign of Cool Web Search.
