Notso - me too, but that's what our aerodynamics instructor (a DC-9 skipper with SAS) told us bright faces. His story was that ATR was an option which SAS didn't take, but McD still installed as it was cheaper, production wise, than not to. Therefore crews were never briefed on the operation of the system.
