Although my own logbook is neat and tidy, it is not as soulless as you imply (I've used rubber stamps to include images of every airplane that I have soloed, next to the relevant 'first solo' entries).
I'm afraid that they don't do enough stamps for some of us ; seriously the remarks column is there to be used - it is possible for a logbook to be reasonably neat and tidy (I seem to get tidier as I get older - at-least in my logbook) and contain a lot of "colour" about what you've done and where you've been.
