There have been some side-splitting stories come out of PNG regards booze and it's effect on the national nervous system.
I was a young didiman working in Madang Dustrict from 1961 to 1963, and witnessed - first hand - the first day of legal drinking at the old Madang Hotel. Think it was in Nov 63?
Anyway, they all lined up at the bar, had a few SP or GB starters, then proceeded to polish off the top shelf stuff - a shot of each!
Left to right, or right to left, it mattered not! They were absolutely smashed within an hour.
Then came the fun part. You have never, ever, seen the like of the performance as the intrepid lads attempted to mount their wiliwils. They were in the barets, thru the hedges and guts up on the rough coronas roads of that era. What a circus!!!
The local polis wagon was on hand, and they all gained a free ride home. It was all done without malice - nobody was locked up - just big grins! They passed out so fast that there wasn't time to fight anyone.
It was a great time to be up there.
