I have some sympathy for those who are paying for type ratings. As has rightly been observed, if you turn down the job 'on principle' the next guy will just say 'thanks mate' and the matter is at an end.

Regarding the 'great company' perspective - we have all been there. My first job was with Channex on the Handley Page Herald and I thought I had just won the lottery when they offered it to me! Eighteen months later I was off to better things and delighted to see the back of the place. That may be hypocritical, but I hope it is not. It is nonetheless exactly what I felt at the time. I am now fortunate enough to be an Airbus captain, which I really love doing. The strangest thing is that I now look back on my first job flying the Herald with Channex with a warm glow and reminisce on how great it was after all! How weird is that?
