Thanks for the advice gents.

He's got SP2 on CD ready to go on. I expect it'll be ZoneAlarm as opposed to the Microsoft firewall. I have seen conflicting info on whether the firewall in XP SP2 does outbound protection and as there is more than one machine on the network there having outbound protection too seems sensible.
