Can only speak for the US, but it's a very good time to have a rotary CPL right now. On the fixed wing side, regionals are hiring and looking for similar experience to that required in the late '90s. Depends what you want to do. At the top of the career ladder rotary jobs tends to be a lot more interesting, but pay a lot less too. If flying for a career was what I wanted to do I'd go rotary right now.
If you can pass the medical and can make the money to pay for your lessons you can be taught how to fly a plane, helicopters are harder. Unless you are a real muppet - actually that doesn't seem to matter either
