I have just tried working it out.

It is remarkably similar in cash in pocket terms. For example, if you fly the average 20 days and take the cash housing allowance, it appears that you end up with about the same as if you were in Emirates working about the same number of days and getting a bit of overtime. Personally, I prefer knowing what I am going to earn, so do not like the idea of daily pay at all. What if you're sick? Annual leave?

Emirates has the advantage in staff travel, utilities are paid for (at the moment!) medical for you and family, loss of licence (3yrs salary) and a provident fund.

Starting salary for FO is about Dhs17000, Captain's first year should be around Dhs25,000.

Housing allowance for FO is Dhs95,000, for Captain, Dhs105,000.

Staff travel, FO gets an annual family leave ticket home within the first three years, anywhere thereafter. This is econonmy upgradeabloe business space available.

Captains get business, upgradeable first space available.

Unlimited ID90s can be purchased and there is an annual ID90 given free, rising to two a year after ten years.

If you can stomach it until you are 60 and you have served at least 15 years, you get subsidised private health care.

Emirates gives 42 days annual leave and a computerised rostering / bidding system that should allow you to bid for days off either side of leave to get more time away.

It ain't the job it used to be, but where is?
