Thanks, P.Pilcher ... everything appears to be as it should but clearly there is something I've missed. I haven't finished reading about layer management/activation/highlighting yet but I think you have it right and the answer is somewhere in there. The speech bubble layer seems to be active for printing but still all I get is a bitmap with text and no white bubble. I shall persist with reading and learning. Many thanks.
