Plane forced down in Sudan

Hijackers forced a plane carrying about 70 people believed to be Eritreans to land in Sudanese capital on Friday before surrendering to security forces, according to a UN refugee agency official. Michael Lindenbauer, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees deputy representative in Khartoum, said the plane had left southern Libya bound for Eritrea when unidentified hijackers forced the passenger plane to land in Eritrea. "We know the hijacking is over because they surrendered to authorities," Lindenbauer told The Associated Press in Egypt during a telephone interview.

The UN official said no people were injured during the drama, but he had no details on the hijackers' identities not how many there were. The plane landed at a Khartoum airport about 14:00 and the hijacking ended soon after, Lindenbauer said.
