I know I posted this as a separate topic but I think it's actually too good to go to waste, so Mods please forgive me.
The advantage of this is that with an up to date Hosts banning file you get a LOT of protection essentially for free and at no cost to your system in terms of resources or extra programs.
The addition of eDexter speeds things up and gives you the assurance that things are working (you see "Blocked" where the ads should be.

Part 1: is just an up to date anti-junk Hosts file that redirects your browser to a non-existent Web address (127.0.0.1) when it sees a known source of spam/adware. I've been using such a Hosts file for ages but this one is uptodate and the setup is neat. You can (and should) personalise your hosts file as well. This is combined with:
Part 2: eDexter is a tiny Webserver works only within your PC (no security worries). It fields the Hosts requests and returns a tiny GIF saying "Blocked!" (or anthing else you like). This speeds up the whole affair considerably.
For the nerdy, you can also use a PAC datafile which is much faster than searching through a large unindexed Hosts file. There are a a couple of other neat tricks too...
