Laptops use a lot of customer hardware, this is likley to be harder than it looks. I am sure have read of people trying this, i'll dig out some links (I had similar thoughts a while back.) ...

The main problem, apart from custom hardware, is that most video cards out put an anlaogue signal, Laptop LCD's take a digital signal, so you need to convert from one to the other and that is often as expensive as a cheap LCD monitor.
