I was hoping we could combine our considerable experiences learning about everything aviation to compile a comprehensive list of textbooks/publications that you found particually helpful during your studies as I was somewhat overwhelmed at the shear number avaliable!
I'll start with some basics that I have used. Please feel free to add any that you feel helped you and therefore deserve a mention on PPRuNe.
The Private Pilot's Licence Course x 5 books by Jeremy M Pratt

(dont know wat i would have done without these!)
On Great White Wings by Fred Culick and Spencer Dunmore (Covers the very earliest history of flight....very interesting)
Handling The Big Jets by D P Davis
(Highlights many if not all of the differences between props and jets...mostly very easy to follow throughout for the novice and a good referance for experienced jet pilots)
