New Brisbane base for Virgin Blue aircraft maintenance

Virgin Blue is to build a new aircraft maintenance facility in Brisbane

Transport minister John Anderson has given Virgin Blue the green light to begin major development on a new aircraft maintenance base at Brisbane Airport.

In a statement released today, the budget carrier said it had worked closely with the federal government and Brisbane Airport Corporation over recent months to secure the development approvals, with support from the Queensland government.

The new hangar is to facilitate maintenance for Virgin Blue B737 aircraft and will complement the carrier’s Melbourne maintenance centre, which handles aircraft operating out of southern ports.

Virgin Blue ceo Brett Godfrey said the airline’s long-term plan was to operate a facility capable of providing maintenance services to regional and international airlines in a strategic location closer to Asian hubs and an hour’s flight from Sydney.
