JAA Licence abroad?

Just a quick question to those who have jobs abroad.
If you have a JAA licence and you are working in a non-JAA State..then what happens to your licence?

I know some have converted to the national licence of that country, (Oz, S.Africa etc.) and this will be revalidated by the revalidation checks you do. However does your JAR licence automatically get revalidated this way too?
Some airlines in non-JAA states accept JAA licences, (Emirates?) so what happens in this situation?

From what i gather, and need clarification on is the TRE signing your check needs to be JAR authorised too. If not, does that mean a spell workin abroad could mean potentially letting the JAA licence lapse, requiring complete re-test if you want to get it back?!

Thanks
