Thanks for the tips - I am not sure what the difference is between getting an FAA licence based on my UK one, or getting an FAA one in its own right, but think that for the second option I would need to get a visa which adds to the paperwork.
Anyway, it seems academic now as I still can't find an R44 in Ohio - other than the police one, and I doubt I will be able to borrow that!
