HERE'S a good read about XP shutdown problems. I've skip read it and didn't see your problem exactly but there may be a clue for you.
"...If you press the
Restart Button on his keyboard..." I don't got one of those! If it's a special keyboard, maybe the configuration needs tweaking.
Also, Roxio is often cited as the culprit for these difficulties.
