d spammers 'sniff' the world-wide information superweb for email addresses. The main way to stay spam-free(ish) is never subscribe to these services and never inlcude the email address in a form being submitted unencrypted.
Was working for me until Mrs bcfc ordered some flowers using my mail address and now the spam flood gates are well and truly open.
