What Flingwing207 says is essentially correct, with one small exception. The
"Synchromesh" description is totally correct for the Side-by-side configuration, and part of the answer for the Intermeshing configuration.
The Intermeshing configuration is sort of a hybrid between the Side-by-side and the Coaxial. Most Intermeshing helicopters use both opposed longitudinal cyclic and differential collective.
