I have also heard the same story, but I thought it was an urban myth. Pretty much as you described, in a 767, and the paxing captain became disturbed when Flight attendants started getting life rafts ready! He asked to go to the cockpit, and
suggested that the crew use all of the Auto-pilots.
Would be interesting to know if there are any facts behind this one.
