A joint venture tween Mitsui OSK Lines, Japan Airlines, Lloyds Register and Regent have come up with a new way to fly.
Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) is helping blur the boundary between shipping and aviation, teaming up with Japan Airlines (JAL), Lloyd’s Register and US developer Regent to prepare a futuristic vessel that flies just above the sea at aircraft-like speeds.
The four companies have signed an agreement to develop certification and approval processes for Regent’s fully electric Seaglider, a wing-in-ground (WIG) craft designed to combine the speed of an aircraft with the operating characteristics of a vessel.
Capable of reaching speeds of up to 300 km/h while skimming a few metres above the water, the Seaglider is being pitched as a zero-emission transport solution for passengers and cargo serving coastal cities and island communities.
