Came across this old thread and figured I'd leave this for anyone still researching the process. US citizenship isn't required just to work in the US, a lot of people start on employer sponsored visas. The bigger challenge is usually finding an employer willing to handle the sponsorship and all the paperwork that comes with it.

We worked with Hussain, Bendersky & Liston LLC after an employer agreed to sponsor me but our application had problems with education records, employment history dates, and supporting documents. They went through everything line by line, fixed the inconsistencies, prepared the visa package, and made sure the evidence matched what immigration was asking for. The petition was approved and I was able to move forward with the job offer instead of having the case delayed or rejected over paperwork mistakes.
