I seem to recall that during the Shuttle days, killing off the SRBs was discussed
The Shuttle (and now Artemis) SRBs have a "flight termination system" activated by the range safety officer which splits the booster casings causing an immediate loss of thrust and break up. It was used after the Challenger explosion to destroy the SRBs although it was sometime after the initial explosion before the command was given.
