The Suez Canal can only carry ships up to a certain maximum size. This is around 150,000 Dead Weight Tonnage (DWT). Such vessels have a capacity of up to 1 million barrels of oil.
This is known as the Suezmax.
Many tankers, container vessels and bulkers simply cannot fit through Suez. This needs to be taken into account when considering increased traffic around the Cape route.
