[MODULAR] PPL theory material recommendations

Hello Pprune and fellow (soon to be) pilots!

For background, I am 35, currently expat in China where I have a non aviation related office job that is [relatively] good paying.

I am looking at starting my modular path to hopefully reach the airlines before im 40.

As aviation is pretty much impossible to get in from 0hour in China, I short listed a few schools in eastern Europe (I am French national) to start with my PPL.

My question is: Is it recommended to start studying the theory now on my own before doing the PPL this summer? If so, what book would you recommend? I thought of asking the schools but I am not sure which on i would go to yet so I'm thinking better avoid buying a book that will not be used by other schools? I'm also thinking of buying the famous Cepadues book in French that is used in all French schools, would it be ok to study the theory with the French books even though I am gonna fly in eastern Europe?

Thanks for the answers!

Cheers
