Have to confess I'm slightly confused as to whether you've lost all your bookmarks, or just the ability to edit/move them, however what I'd do before anything else, as others have said, is back up what you have. From there you could try restarting your machine (actually turn it completely off, wait for a few minutes, then start).
If that didn't work I'd also backup your Firefox profile directory, following which an attempt at reinstalling or otherwise working with the profiles might restore whatever is missing (the reason for first backing up the directory is so that if you mess up and completely break Firefox you can restore it).
While I'm not able to specifically help with your M$ installation, in the distribution of Linux+FF I'm using there is a 'places.sqlite' file inside the default profile directory - it is this file that contains bookmarks. In my case it's ~5MB, and I don't have a lot of bookmarks, if you can find yours it may be worth looking to see what size it is, from your description I'd expect it to be somewhat more than this .. if not then they may be lost. That said there's also a 'bookmarkbackups' directory under the default profile, and if you've done any sort of raw file backup you may be able to directly restore the sqlite file, if not just import an earlier html or json backup of your bookmarks.
