Hi guys, first post here. I'm looking for some guidance.
For context:
I am a private pilot in Japan with around 85 hours of flight time (bare minimum solo completed). Ever since I was a child, I’ve wanted to become an airline pilot. Unfortunately, I was not successful in the ab initio programs for the major airlines (JAL/ANA). They are extremely competitive, and at one point I decided to give up on the idea.
A few years later, I obtained my PPL in Long Beach, California, about six years ago. However, I stopped flying until very recently. Since returning to flying, I’ve had the opportunity to meet and talk with pilots from around the world, which reignited my passion. Whether it’s corporate or airline flying, I now feel strongly that I want to pursue a professional career in aviation.
I’d like to ask if anyone here has been in a similar situation and has successfully gone on to fly professionally.
My two biggest concerns are:
- Training costs
Until recently, I was in debt (not a large amount), but I’ve since paid it off and am now financially clear. That said, I don’t have much in savings. I know that pursuing CPL/IR/Multi, etc. can be extremely expensive, with many schools quoting over $100,000 for training. I can’t quite see how most people afford that without saving every penny for years.
- Employment after training
After investing such a large sum into training, the next challenge is securing a job to start recovering that investment. As an international pilot, I’m uncertain how many opportunities actually exist to be hired as a First Officer or in another professional role.
Given these concerns, I’d love to hear your opinions: what is the most affordable and cost-efficient way to start my journey toward becoming a professional pilot? I’ve looked into various scholarships and ab initio programs, but most require citizenship or residency in the country offering them. I’ve even considered applying for a working holiday visa, finding a job abroad, and completing my training there.
Any advice or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated.
