The partition table on the new HDD is unreadable - probably because the Disk's previous owner formatted it with a third-party Program such as Partition Magic.
I get involved in this kind of thing from time to time. To solve these kinds of problems (they are not uncommon), I either use an external enclosure for the problem disk and get Partition Magic on to the job or I use this set-up with the "new" disk suitably jumpered as Slave.
