It's not just that, it's all the connections it opens up through IST which SAW just doesn't match. Turkey itself is of course a huge market from STN and the Turkish Airlines domestic network is vast, as is their international network that provides real competition with Emirates. A long overdue addition I'd say.
I'm just left wondering what, if anything, this may mean for the AJet service to SAW. It's heavily competed with Pegasus, and for many years used to operate with TK mainline from LGW before the bulk of SAW activity went to AJet and they shifted the service to STN. Now with TK mainline operating STN-IST, that would be capable of also picking up the VFR demand as a differentiator to Pegasus. I wouldn't be too surprised if AJet ended up back at LGW, or even LTN.
