ITAR is a pain. If you use a US component which is subject to ITAR in your Japanese engine, effectively that engine is affected by ITAR. Loads of designs fall foul of that. The cost of substituting them with non-ITAR bits can be done but it takes time and money. Depending on what it is it could be significant. I was more than happy to leave ITAR behind me when I left Engineering!
