The Coast Guard statement came in response to our questions about claims made by U.S. Rep. Chris Smith on Tuesday that a 47-foot Coast Guard ship “was followed by between 12 and 30 of these drones as they went through the water — followed, right behind them.”
If you look on flight tracker history for that area from early December onwards it is an exceptionally busy area. Even the US Navy has history of filming commerical airliners at night and claiming UAPs off the West Coast. US Rep Chris Smith also references the claim of a police officer who said that he counted 50 drones during his shift at Island Beach State Park. At night aviation lights can be very deceptive and as we have seen on the news and social meda people are simply filming perfectly routine aviation. They are completely unaware of the traffic patterns in their area and just how far way at night aviation lights can be seen. Just like the police officer you can imagine observers on the Coast Guard ship observing lights in the area and misinterpreting such aviation lights as drones. What they assume is in close proximity is actually much futher away.
Following link for Island Beach State Park webcam. During night time the sky will filled with aviation lights many of which you could track on a flight tracker.

From ADSBExchange playback from the evening onwards for 8th December. Speed set at approx 50x. If you were an observer on the beach or on a boat you would be seeing aviation lights constantly. These lights would be observed changing course due to the aviation patterns in the area. You can see how observers assigned on a watch could misinterpret aviation lights at night.
