FMT - a suggestion oft mooted, mainly by the crews!
When the first of the new VC10 course students had to express a preference for posting, a certain Wg Cdr got all excited because the majority wanted to be posted to 'his' sqn. Gave him such a rosy glow it did. But when we asked them why they'd done so, it was obvious really. It had nothing to do with numberplates or leadership, it was because 'his' sqn was all housed in a real sqn set up on its own part of the aerodrome with its own aeroplanes parked ouside and its own engineers living in half the building.
Later they were forced into a cramped, unpleasant building out of sight of the aircraft, aerodrome or engineers which they had to share with the other squadron. Effect on morale? One NCA Air Engineer told me "My first year under the old regime was the best time I'd ever had in the RAF. But now I'd do anything to get posted back to Hercs...... I hate this depressing new set up". So, like so many others, he embarked upon his civil pilot's licences - another victim of a cut too far!
