Richard,
I have to be a bit careful here or I am likely to be accused of all sorts of geriatric crimes!! When i joined the RAF as a u/t pilot the academic requirement was 5 GCE 'O' levels (inc. Maths). In those days it would appear sufficient academically - five days at Hornchurch tended to sort out the remainder of the requirements. It seemed to work and certainly kept me in military flying for the rest of my days. I fully accept that there have been many changes over time regarding equipment etc. but feel that the current generation of potential military aircrew have just as much potential without the need for higher educational standards. I see it around me nearly every day!!
