Well indeed! It's a hill many/most experienced pilots are unwilling to climb (and after narrowly being too late to get on a cadet course in the early 90s, that's what I decided thereafter too). A reward for service is one thing (normal practice is for that to be capped at 5 years), but it has amazed me ever since that such a towering gradient of terms for the same job has continued to exist.
