BAC 1-11’s were noisier I seem to remember. Luton peaked at just over 3m passengers back then and had to use a marque but at least the drop off area was right outside the terminal although passengers still got wet walking to the aircraft from the gate. No passport checks at the gate back then either. As for the terminal, it is still in use today but is incorporated into one of many extensions.
Coming back to the here and now, the replacement temporary custom built drop off area has been opened in the mid term car park. Sorry to say it hasn’t made the slightest difference to the traffic queues at peak times which, as I write this, are heading towards the railway bridge on the A505. Off peak it is fine.
