AIPA had not undertaken a PIA ballot, so advising its members to take any form of industrial action would have been unprotected. The members would have been liable for
penalties of up to $18,780 and the union $93,900.
Several AIPA members are also AFAP members and they are allowed to participate in PIA.
AIPA recommending members engage in unprotected action would hardly be in the members best interest.
The AIPA negotiators did not believe PIA would lead to a better EA outcome. It is not possible at this stage to determine who is correct. So far, the AFAP PIA has not achieved its presumed purpose of extracting a superior EA offer from the company. Hopefully this will change and the pilots will achieve the improved conditions they deserve.
