My understanding is that the ACCC approved a split up of the supply in regions to the different companies. That is still the case today. So in some states BP dominates, Shell in others, World Fuel Services in others and more widely independents.
It's a bit more complicated than that. Basically, the oil majors lost control a few years back and now anyone who cares to fill in the paperwork can sell fuel anywhere they want. Independents, yep.. even airports themselves!
Personally, I'll always choose one of the majors if I have a choice, but only because I know they do more QC checks than some of the others. Buyer beware.
