My understanding of the country aerodrome fuel situation back in the day (and still so) was that the geography of the country meant that fuel volumes out in the bush were not enough to sustain multiple suppliers at each location.
My understanding is that the ACCC approved a split up of the supply in regions to the different companies. That is still the case today. So in some states BP dominates, Shell in others, World Fuel Services in others and more widely independents.
