PRESS RELEASE
Tui and Jet 2, are each adding an extra based aircraft, meaning the aircraft stands will be at capacity this summer. They quote Steve Griffiths saying "Extra aircraft bringing our stands to capacity also shows airlines’ confidence in EMA and bodes well for the future.”
This quote is slightly confusing. How can the stands being at capacity (assuming he means for overnight based aircraft) bode well for future growth? Unless the strategy is entirely focused on carriers NOT basing more aircraft at EMA and flying to EMA from other bases?
One bit of information that they will be aware of but won't be sharing is below but it was in the days of easyjet, BMI Baby and Thomas Cook
January 2024 passenger numbers 177184
January 2008 passenger numbers 343339
The thing that shocked me was how close back in January 2008 EMA was to BHX in terms of passengers numbers with BHX recording 576081. This makes the EMA figure around 60% of the BHX total and January 2024 it will be more like 20-25%.
Not too many airports can show that amount of a decline in 16 years and I was truly shocked by these numbers even if BHX was a basket case back in 2008.
